Meaningful Use Stage 3: Aligning clinical decision support with population health goals

Posted on 05/25/2016

In this article, Dr. Allan Strongwater, Senior Vice President of Medical Informatics, discusses Meaningful Use Stage 3 and how the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) is working to align the core function of clinical decision support (CDS), with population health goals, an important step in the value-based care transition. In MU Stage 3, CMS highly emphasizes and recommends CDS interventions related to five specific Clinical Quality Measures (CQMs), two of which can be found in the acute care setting and the remaining three in the outpatient setting. By leveraging alerts in these settings, the CDS can assist in ongoing management and aid in reducing readmissions, morbidity and mortality, giving clinicians a larger view of the overall population and the ability to make an early diagnosis at a more timely intervention. As CQMs continue to promote the improvement of care quality as lower care costs, CDS will play an important role in the adherence to evidence-based best practices.
