Combating Alarm Fatigue: Clinical decision support in the fight against alarm fatigue

In this article, Nancy Zimmerman, RN, BSN, Chief Nursing Officer at medCPU, discusses how clinical decision support can help clinicians combat alarm fatigue. The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Advanced Critical Care, found that 72 percent to 99.4 percent of all clinical alarms have no clinical relevance, which leads to alarm fatigue. However, many provider organizations are leveraging advanced clinical decision support (CDS) solutions to help fight this ongoing concern, as these systems only issue alarms when immediate attention is required. Acting in the background of the EMR, advanced CDS systems only alert clinicians when a deviation from best practices is occurring. This way, clinicians receive fewer alerts, often forgetting the system is there, though when an alert is given, the clinician is grateful for the meaningful assistance.
