In this article, Ami Mayo, M.D., and Chairman of the Medical Department of medCPU, discusses how the use of advanced technologies like clinical decision support (CDS) can help reduce information gaps, medical errors and thus, further improve patient outcomes. For radiologists in particular, CDS can assist clinicians in adhering to best practice guidelines, as this can help reduce medical errors. Because advanced CDS software programs continuously read and analyze the patient record, CDS can alert radiologists, to data that can help inform imaging orders. Without this data, radiologists could expose patients to unnecessary radiation or testing. With CDS, radiologists can be more confident in their work, ensuring their notes are captured, read, understood and incorporated into a patient’s profile and diagnosis, further reducing the possibility of patient harm through adverse events or complications.
